Is your child a fatass? Their school probably thinks so…

Is your child fat?  If their school thinks so, you’ll know soon enough!  Hey guys…so yesterday, I heard a story about a school that sent home letters to some of the parents with children in their school saying that the children were obese.  Here’s the link:

http://www.myfoxboston.com/story/21348194/2013/02/25/school-sends-home-letter-calling-some-students-obese

I have a few thoughts about this, so let me share them with you.  My first thought when hearing this story was this:  Why is the school doing this?  What concern is it to them whether or not the child is obese?  If they are, (which, since they are only judging by BMI and taking nothing else into consideration, most of these kids are probably only overweight, at most), does the school think that the parents don’t know?  I just can’t understand this whole situation.  Schools are a place to send your children to learn, or at least they used to be.  Anymore, there are constantly stories about making school lunches more healthy, and getting the kids more exercise, and I even read a story about some schools making the kids sit on yoga balls instead of chairs at their desks, because it “helps” them pay better attention.  I’m sorry, but I can’t imagine paying attention to anything but the pain in my back after hours of sitting on a yoga ball and having absolutely no back support.  I just don’t feel that it is the school’s place to worry about the body mass of their students.  Well, unless they think that the student is not being fed at home, in which case it becomes an abuse/neglect situation.

I just think that this opens the door to more bullying from other students, along with bashing the self-esteem of the students who received the letters.  Can you imagine how it would feel to have your school send a letter home saying that you’re fat?  Looking at your school nurse, your teacher, your principal, and knowing that they think you are obese?  That, along with the fact that other kids would make a big deal of the situation.  Picture this:  A slightly overweight kid is walking down the hall, and is pushed down by a gang of bullies.  “Hey fatass!  Did you get a letter?  Bet you did, your titties are bigger than my mom’s!”  This is just another form of discrimination for people who are overweight, and now, not only are they going after adults (more info about employment healthcare based on BMI to come later in the week), they are now going after kids, too.  Is it healthy to be fat?  Not always.  Is stigmatizing fat people to the point where their lives are miserable at every turn going to help the “obesity epidemic”?  Hell no.  You know what?  If someone is fat, get over it.  Until you start walking down the street slapping every smoker, or running every person who is texting while driving off the road, or throwing every drug addict into the sewers to live where you think they belong, mind your own damn business.  It is nobody’s business but mine that I am fat.  My obesity is in no way impairing your health, so get over it.  Do you want to sit next to me on the bus because I take up a bit more space than some skinny person?  No, maybe not.  But I don’t wanna sit next to the guy who poured on half a bottle of cologne, either, but sometimes, you gotta do some things that you find unpleasant.  If that random fat person in McDonalds is not impairing YOUR health, then grow up and get over it.  And please…spare me the “well, my taxes are paying for the healthcare of all those obese people!”  arguement.  MY taxes are paying for a whole hell of a lot that I don’t agree with, so, I’m sorry, that arguement is invalid.

Anyways, that’s my thoughts.  What do you guys think?  Go read the story and leave me a comment and let me know!

Uh, yeah…I’m not a slacker, I promise!

Hey guys!  Just doing a quick little post to let you know that I’m not being a huge slacker this week with my lack of posting.  My life has been super crazy since January with us trying to get our house rented out, and I was working on it all day yesterday, hence the lack of a post.  I’ve just been busy with work and junk today, so yeah, that’s why nothing special today either.  Sorry guys…I swear though, once things settle down, I’ll try to get back on my normal post schedule.  Anyways, I thought i would share this with you for laughs, and I hope you come back tomorrow for something real!  See you then!

This would totally be my cat…

“Fat People Shouldn’t” #20

Firstly, guys, it’s pretty hard to believe that I’ve been posting these things for 20 weeks.  That’s a long freakin’ time.  Anyways, yeah.  You ready for a new one?!  I know I am, so here it is!

Ever been driving down the road on your scooter, catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and think, “Good God!  Suspenders?!  What the hell was I thinking?!”  That is where this guy is right now.  On the bright side, they are a nice, tame black and match well with his outfit.  They could be zebra-striped.  Man…zebra-striped suspenders…gotta get me some of those!

Melissa McHippo?

Happy Monday, guys!  How’s it going?  Hope you guys had a restful weekend (I did, for once), and are ready for the week ahead.  Anyways, over the weekend, I was gonna go see Melissa McCarthy’s new movie, “Identity Thief”, and even though I believe that Melissa can do no wrong, I wanted to read some reviews.  So, upon searching, I came across some articles that I found interesting and that I thought I would share with you.

The first is a scathing review from a popular reviewer at the New York Observer, Rex Reed.  Here is the link to the review:

http://observer.com/2013/02/declined-in-identity-thief-batemans-bankable-billing-cant-lift-this-flick-out-of-the-red/

Now, before I continue, I want you guys to know that I DID NOT actually get a chance to go see the movie.  It may possibly be the worst piece of crap that was ever made.  I don’t know.  But, this isn’t really about the movie, it’s about the review.  You see, in Mr. Reed’s review, not only did he review the movie, calling it a “chunk of junk”, and a “trashy, stupefying screenplay”.  Again, maybe it is, and Mr. Reed had every right to express his opinion on the movie, whatever he thought.  But then, he veered off of the movie review, and started reviewing the actors, focusing on Melissa McCarthy.  In the following paragraphs, he referred to Melissa as “tractor-sized”, as well as a “screeching, humongous creep” (talking about her character, but also referencing her weight).  He went on to call her Mr. Bateman’s “female hippo”, and then finishing his rant by calling Melissa McCarthy a  “gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.”  Now, not only was that all…after hating on Melissa for almost the entirety of his review, he went on to say “Poor Jason Bateman. How did an actor so charming, talented, attractive and versatile get stuck in so much dreck?”  Yeah.  Not a bad word to say about “attractive” Jason Bateman.

Now, I was pretty happy with the public response to this.  Normally, fat people are made fun of, (check out any news story using the dreaded “fat body” picture…you know the one…the head is cut off and you see the fat, headless body heading away to McDonalds or wherever), the comments section is full of fat haters.  However, in the comment section on Mr. Reed’s review, there were such comments as follows:

“Wow, this review is seriously offensive.  Calling McCarthy a tractor-sized hippo?  Remind me never to read The Observer again.”

“What a JERK! No one’s dress size has anything to do with their acting ability. This guy seriously needs a well-deserved thump on the head.”

And finally, (pardon the language):

“You sir, are a vile cunt. How dare you call a woman a hippo or say she’s tractor sized. I don’t know who you think you are but it’s a damn shame that at this point in your career you’ve resorted to trashing the way a woman looks as part of your gimmick here. Your perpetuation of a double standard is equally pathetic because we both know if Ms. McCarthy was a man, you wouldn’t even think of calling her fat because you’d get your old ass kicked in a minute. Shame on you.”

Apparently, that guy got on the bad side of many people, as there over 1000 comments similar in nature to these.  Rex Reed then put out a statement, here:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/rex-reed-defends-melissa-mccarthy-421352

and he said things like this:

“I object to using health issues like obesity as comedy talking points. That’s what this girl does, this Melissa Manchester.”  Notice he couldn’t even take the time to figure out who he was talking about, and confused Melissa with a singer who, in my opinion, is in no way comparable.  He went on to say that “I have too many friends that have died of obesity-related illnesses, heart problems and diabetes. … I have helped people try to lose weight, and I don’t find this to be the subject of a lot of humor.”

Obviously, I don’t agree with this.  Yes, obesity issues are sad, terrible, and a killer of millions of people.  But you know what?  I think that you can use humor to bring a taboo subject to light, to stop the hatred that obese people are viewed with.

Anyways, I think that Melissa McCarthy is a wonderful actress and a great role model for people everywhere, someone who is obviously comfortable in her own skin and happy with who she is.  I applaud her for being a person who is not concerned with becoming the stereotypical size 0 actress, (read the article here:  http://www.crushable.com/2012/11/06/other-stuff/melissa-mccarthy-weight-quote-interview-role-model-daughters-878/ ) and being someone who feels that it is important to be a good role model for her daughters.  Thank you, Melissa, for being who you are, and just know this:  As long as you keep making movies, I’ll keep watching them.  Keep up the good work!

Fatties and Bears Don’t Mix

What’s up, guys?  I know it’s been a few days since my last post, but I’ve got something special for you today. It’s a new comic!  And not just any comic…this thing was a BITOCH to make.  I had to do a lot more work making this one that I have on the previous comics that I’ve done, because a lot of the props I wanted were not available, so I had to build them and color them in out of shapes.  So yeah…hopefully you guys get a laugh out of it.  😀  Have a great weekend, guys!
